Often overlooked is the amount of edge distance required for effective sealing at the load zone. Allowing for sufficient edge distance outside the load chute will compensate for belt camber, crooked splice. and tracking problems. Much cleaner transfer points will be realized with a minimum 4" to 6" of free edge distance. This would be in addition to the calculated width required to carry the load. Also be conservative on the bulk density used to calculate the load. The material is in a dynamic state and often the bulk density is somewhat less than publish data due to aeration of the conveyed [read more]

There are a lot of young players who express a need to design chutes for belt conveyors. It seems they need more depth than can be provided by FAQs. I am planning to put together a Handbook on chute design to augment the work of CEMA 6th Edition (and its British equivalent). There can be two types of wear in a chute, abrasion wear and impact wear. Abrasion wear ususally occurs when the material slides along the wear liner material and impact abrasion is when the conveyed material strikes the wearliner at oblique angles. One or both types of wear may be present in a chute. Some materials resist impact abrasion, some materials resist sliding abrasion, and some materials resist both very well. My question is, what is the difference between or how to do you compare both these methods of vulcanizing? I am managing a team of belters who are specialized in cold vulcanzing, and it seems that more and more belts are converting to hot vulcanizing, and I am talking about just normal belts. Engineers/end-users claimed that hot vulcanized belt are far superior than cold vulcanized belts. I have explained to them that: 1. Although this may sound elementary, when considering splice failures, either cold (I lke to refer to these as chemical splices) or hot, one major problem is the direction the lap of the splice was made in the first place. The lap should be in the direction so belt cleaners and sealing systems will not "dig" into the splice and start peeling the top layer back. Also I have found that layering the belt slightly longer than recommended will increase the life of the chemical splice. [read more]

Simply detecting if the chute is plugged is certainly the first step in eliminating this problem. However, there is technology available to prevent chute pluggage. Many times a vibrator, air cannon, or chute redesign can totally elliminate chute pluggage. We would need to know items such as the conveyed material, chute size and layout, and how often the chute plugs. [read more]

James, the trapping of rock usually causes belt damage called entrapment point damage. The belt sag between the idlers allows the rocks to become entrapped, damaging the skirting and the belt. Depending on the amount of material in the hopper, the pressure on the belt can be huge. Even when the idlers are placed as close as possible. belt sag can still occur.
